Kiera’s Quest is a fantasy series targeted at the YA/tween audience.
Awakenings opens with Zakk in a cave with the Witch Queen. This is an eerie scene, full of magic and emotion. This sets the foundation for the action to come.
Next we meet Kiera as she’s doing what all teens do … dancing and singing into her toothbrush … that is until she realises friend Maddy has been silently watching her. This scene endeared Kiera to me straight away!
We find out about Kiera’s family background and meet her friends as they hang out for the day. This leads us on to how that although Kiera has this strong friendship group, she feels something is missing and her dreams are different.
What follows is a plot full of action as Kiera begins her quest with a very tight deadline. She has to unite the rings before Zakk’s birthday otherwise the Witch Queen rules.
I enjoyed the uniqueness of how Zakk is represented in our world and the way the plot weaves back and forth between the alternating realities so that with Zakk in our world, we are still following the plot in the Dark Palace.
The school community is portrayed well and the conflict this brings is exactly how it is in reality.
The characters are believable and the targeted YA market will be able to identify with them. I loved the Witch Queen’s servant Googe … obedient but also hungry for power!
The plot is full of action with surprises and allies keeping the reader engaged and wanting to find out where the plot leads to next.
The ending is perfect – the plot is partly resolved and Kiera must go off on another journey.
I have to say that I think Awakenings would translate well for a console game and would make an excellent TV series.
